Collection Description

Our collection’s theme explores artwork depicting the beheading of Medusa. This is an artistic motif that is quite important because of its prevalence in pottery, statues, and other historical works of art that are generally considered a portal to the fantastic mythology of the past. Relating to the past, our collection contains artworks created from as early as 600 BCE to the beginning of the 21st century. Mainly, the objects in our collection were created during or after the advent of the Industrial Revolution.

Our project is intended for scholars researching artwork of Medusa or for educational use by students and teachers. Thus, it would serve as a helpful collection of images for these purposes. Using photos of these artworks, mostly sculptures and pottery fragments, will be our primary method of distribution. We will also provide important metadata pertaining to each object in our collection, helping to optimize the organization and accessibility of its objects. We have obtained most of these photos from digital museums and archives that provide images of artwork in the public domain.
